The Snow shovel part of the essential equipment in off-piste. It is therefore important to choose carefully, in order to opt for the shovel that will perhaps allow you to save a life in an avalanche.

Therefore, Precision Ski gives you some tips to choose your shovel freeride.

The material of the snow shovel

The first thing you need to look on the purchase of your shovel is the material. One aluminum snow shovel will be lighter, but less robust than a shovel in metal. Meanwhile, teflon coating will prevent the appearance of frost on your equipment.

The size of the handle

The size of the handle of a snow shovel is an important feature to consider. Indeed, if the latter must be adapted to your template. If it is too small, leverage will be reduced and you will encounter difficulties to identify large volumes of snow.

You may very well opt for a folding snow shovel or telescopic handle which allows you to save space in your bag back and to have access to a good length of neck at clearance.

The bucket of snow shovel

It is preferable to opt for a shovel ski bucket metal, more cutting edge, to break the hard snow. A plastic bucket will be weaker and will break more easily, especially in low temperatures.

Also pay attention to the edges. When shoveling, you sometimes have to set foot on the edge of the shovel and if it is running, you will not be able to attack blocks cutting in hard snow.
